Jeremy Scott’s Federico Fellini-inspired Roman Moschino Pre-Fall 2019 runway show was apropos of the greater moment. “It’s all the things I love about him, come to light . . . . There are exaggerations, off-duty showgirls, Casanovas. It’s surreal, it’s otherworldly,” said Scott of the collection inspired by the late Italian filmmaker.

Characters came to life as women in herringbone tweed topcoats with starkly contrasting satin bows, tailored coatdresses with ancient font embroideries, flou in force, and chandelier earrings the size of actual chandeliers. These nouveau Fellini sketches were embodied by everyone from Teddy Quinlivan to Denek Kania to Jon Kortajarena to Nadja Auermann.

Latin inscriptions snaked over Italian tweeds and tailored coats were cinched with huge satin bows on both boys and girls. Scott paid homage to Rome’s Alta Moda couture heritage, heavily referencing the golden age of Italian fashion with dramatic swagged gowns and opulent, Renaissance inflected bodices.

The models, with their towering wigs and grand gowns, looked like extras from Satyricon, 8 ½, Casanova, Roma and La Dolce Vita. He injected streetwear into the mix with silken tracksuits encrusted with glittering skeleton embroideries inspired by Italian relics.
