Oscar de la Renta takes us seaside to unveil an aquatic-themed Pre-Fall collection.
December 19, 2017
The Oscar de la Renta Pre-Fall 2018 runway show was presented at thethe Picnic House at Pier 40, overlooking the Hudson River. Designers Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim crafted the collection with summertime at the sea in mind, taking place an entire six months after its debut. “We designed for a summer delivery,” Garcia said. “When it gets to the stores, it’s going to be what you want to wear to your summer house.”
Aquatic references were aplenty—from the fish bone embroidered jackets, the seagull printed shirt-dresses, to the whimsical nods to fish nets on knitwear and tulle gowns. Fish schooled, first as shoulder-duster earrings and later as a large laser-cut leather appliqué on a tulle gown. The collection featured a postcard-print cowl-back blouse and matching spiral-seamed skirt, as well as “fishnet” sweaters, that will be easier for the landlubbers in the crowd to embrace.
Garcia and Kim gave it an Oscar flair, cutting the shirts in starchy white poplin and adding dramatic cuffs. A black wool crepe dress with pearls embroidered on its three-quarter sleeves was pretty faultless, as was its slim coat twin. The other outerwear here was grand in a way that Mr. De la Renta might have recognized. A reversible ivory shearling would’ve been just the thing for the chilly trip from the pier back to the office.
