Van Cleef & Arpels has opened its new boutique in Spain on one of Barcelona’s most famous shopping streets: Paseo de Gracia. Adorned with the famous mosaics of Antoni Gaudí, the wide avenue links Plaza de Catalunya with the neighborhood of Gracia. Behind this window, a large space measuring 286 m² boasts, it opens onto the shopping street through a large window flanked by two doors decorated with intricate wrought ironwork.
Emulating Barcelona’s history, the store’s façade is adorned with an extensive mosaic designed by Mathilde Jonquière. Inspired by Gaudí’s work which can be admired in Park Güell and Casa Batlló – the artist created three frescoes made from glass paste tesserae, which form a colorful cameo in shades of white, cream, gold, and platinum. Surrounding the showcases with these precious motifs, these mosaics represent a series of clouds arranged in a pattern that marries transparency with opalescence, matte finishes with shiny reflections. The tesserae, placed and glued by hand using the “trencadís” technique, play with the city lights, as though real clouds pierced by the sun’s rays.
In the entrance, Corteccia, a custom-made chandelier produced by Veronese composed of nine Murano crystal tubes guides visitors to the library and the series of rooms. The second floor of the boutique covers a large space, inviting the visitor to discover Van Cleef & Arpels’ creations, displayed in showcases or majestically arranged under glass chandeliers. Hidden from view, a private space furnished with plush armchairs and a dark wood bookcase is discreetly separated by a decorative partition adorned with openwork geometric designs inspired by the clerestory motif that appears on a 1937 Minaudière.
Van Cleef & Arpels’ emblematic collections, such as Perlée, Alhambra, and Frivole, and watchmaking creations celebrating its savoir-faire are displayed in this Art Deco showcase, offering a moment of timeless serenity.
