This Rick Owens DRKSHDW x Converse collaboration brings together the black and white canvas of Converse and the minimalist luxury of Rick Owens, creating a new sneaker, the TURBODRK Chuck 70.
The TURBODARK Chuck 70 follows Owens’ practice of confident contortion of cultural signifiers. His choices bend and reshape the shoe — extending the tongue and squaring-off the toe, the first time the famed Converse has presented in this execution in its century of existence.
“When I think of Converse, I think of the black and white Chuck Taylors and the punk rock generation. These have always been iconic pillars of my aesthetic,” says Owens. “Wearing Chuck Taylors, you align yourself with a generation that was experimental. There is a confident dynamic to the subculture.”
Featuring an extended tongue, a double sole and a triple toe cap, the shoe brings back the era of punk rock that Converse high tops have become so synonymous with for decades. Perhaps the biggest change though is the shape of the toe: it’s a square toe sneaker for the first time ever, simultaneously marking the first time the actual shape of the Chuck 70 has changed in the history of Converse.
To mark the launch of the collaboration, multidisciplinary duo Fecal Matter is the face of the campaign, bringing that feeling of punk rock and grotesqueness to the collection. Beyond this campaign and curating social media content, Fecal Matter also sells clothing and accessories on Depop.
With a shared willingness to continually evolve form and function, the Converse x Rick Owens DRKSHDW collaboration will reimagine and re-articulate classic Converse sneakers throughout 2021.
