For the Self-Portrait Pre-Fall 2019 collection, Han Chong started with his signature lace, which was imagined in an ultra-light, ivory floral design with tiny black stitching. It looked particularly charming on a puff-sleeve, nipped-waist midi dress. That silhouette, with its vintage vibe and subtle sex appeal, will no doubt be the shape of the season—both for Self-Portrait and other brands.
“Self-Portrait is made for women who want to look and feel effortless all the while being the best dressed in any room. For pre-fall 2019, the collection consists heavily of our signature lace with a touch of newness such as leopard print devoré and sequins. The millinery alleys of Jerusalem inspired the vibrant pops of cadmium yellow and cherry matching the heat of the summer.”
An ivory dress won’t pass muster for a customer’s back-to-back summer weddings, of course. Chong is so attuned to his women’s needs that he designs the Self-Portrait Pre-Fall 2019 with their friends’ weddings in mind, meaning here were handfuls of other, more colorful options. A languid floral slip dress in shades of papaya, pale blue, and yellow stood out as a winning choice, ditto for a twist-front dress in bright “cadmium yellow”.
In addition to the opening look, Chong showed a handful of white dresses, too: a long-sleeved macramé gown, a ruched number in various black-and-ivory leopard prints, and a spaghetti-strap lace midi dress that dates back to his earliest collections.
