For the Temple St. Clair Spring 2019 collection, the jewels represent an abstract look at nature through pattern and color, with nature captured in brilliant dreams. Sources of inspiration were found in the art and decorative patterns created in the early 1900’s in Vienna during the period of the Wiener Werkstätte (Vienna Workshop).
A return look was also given to the 6th century Byzantine mosaics found in the cathedral of San Vitale in Ravenna, an early source of inspiration for TSC. In these early mosaics, figures and landscapes created in gem-like colors float in a backdrop of shimmering gold. This collection unites a stylized view of natural details from the 6th century to the 20th century from Ravenna to Vienna.
The titles of the pieces include river, whirlpool, island, and flower field. A precious array of gemstones includes multi-colored sapphires in blues, greens and violets; with vibrant touches of red spinel. The jewels are just as worthy of Byzantine Empress Theodora as of the women that Viennese painter Gustav Klimt portrayed in rich textiles and exotic backdrops.
