Alexander Wang unveiled his Resort 2017 collection emphasizing on 1980s hip-hop and highlights special edition Kangol Peebles headwear.
The plaid of low-slung board shorts has been cut into a double-breasted pantsuit, with a black silk slip dress and black pajama set with a pole dancer jacquard. The boudoir-ish vibe extended even to knits. A ballet pink sweater and sweaterdress came with built-in exposed bra straps. The designer still incorporates the comfort factor; see the leopard spot V-neck cardigan and matching leggings.
The brand’s core design of the Kangol hat is actually the newsboy-style Peebles cap—a style once a favorited by some of the biggest ‘80s rappers. Alexander Wang reimagined the classic design with two styles, black patent leather or leopard print nylon, stamped with a “Flipgirl” patch, showcasing the upside down pole dancer than makes an appearance throughout the collection. Both styles encapsulate the era in a modern, high-fashion way.
The designer said, “I’m constantly influenced by its artists and its evolution and influence on the street. So, naturally revisiting my memories of Kangol and bringing it into our vocabulary and remixing its values was a fun experience.”
