Capturing elements of a multi-sensorial immersion in Japanese aesthetics, the Elie Saab Resort 2017 collection travels across contrasting moods of tradition and pop urban inspiration.
The designer has created silhouettes that are at once aerated and sexy, graphic and sportswear inspired. Wide, knotted belts along the waist pull in generous volumes, like a kimono controlled. Meanwhile, jumpsuits and skirts become fluid and feminine, while bare open shoulders draw the eye to a high-collared neck enclosure, offsetting rituals of restraint.
Ruffles uplift and layer, while pleating and cropped length pants energize a youthful kawaii-style reverie. Sportswear separates lend an urban edge with hoodies in perforated suede and embellished leather bomber jacket.
Soft and stimulating colors cross-dialogue in shades of blossom, lavender and porcelain against pops of tangerine, mimosa, black and dark cherry.
Embellishments are subtle or striking, seen in lace and tulle floral appliqués posed like brooches or the bold cherry blossom print that echoes its influence in guipure lace and elaborate leather and beadwork to form 3D Technicolor blooms.
Le 31 bag assumes each decorative bloom – whether in print, leather or beadwork – as well as contrasts of graphic and stitching. Shoes adopt a Nipponese aesthetic with wooden sole platform and wedge sandals.
The 2017 Resort collection is a haven of calm and colorful contradictions, serene yet unexpected, as a parenthesis to urban grey.
