ULLA JOHNSON SPRING 2021 AD CAMPAIGN

The Spring collection offerings are sculptural yet relaxed—statement dressing imbued with biotic ease.

March 15, 2021

A modernist sensuality and organic ease informs the Ulla Johnson Spring 2021 ad campaign, shot in New York City and hand collaged by Yelena Yemchuk.

Looking to Japan, Johnson was inspired by ceremonial dress, shibori printing, graphic handloom and boro patchwork, ikebana, and the place were delicacy and structure converge. Clean, origami-like pleating offsets the fluidity and fragility of softly constructed diaphanous silhouettes while amply cut trousers offer an understated masculine counterpoint. The collection offerings are sculptural yet relaxed—statement dressing imbued with biotic ease.

The collection blooms with color, grounded in a refined psychedelia. The tonal dynamism is an interplay between restraint and euphoria with a muted palette of clay, alabaster, faded olive and tea-dyed khaki punctuated with irreverent bursts of hot coral, electric purple and warm chartreuse.

Exploring the symbolic language of flowers in Japanese culture, Johnson creates prints that are dense with botanicals such as poppies, cherry blossoms and azaleas. Italian cloque, crisp poplin and soft silks are printed with swirling flowers and rivers—trippy takes on lush Edo-period nature illustrations and antique kimonos. Prints are spliced, layered and inlaid, creating a dreamy intarsia effect, while monochromatic looks imbue an easy cadence.

Handbags, launching this season, evoke an elevated nonchalance. Built by hand in Italy, the range encompasses essential love-to-live-in shapes and proportions rounded out by an offering of everyday baskets and a champagne carrier crafted in the Philippines.
