Shot in and around downtown New York, the 3.1 Phillip Lim Fall 2020 RTW collection celebrated familiar territory with fine-tuned essentials.
“I remember dressing windows at my first space on Mercer and what it was like to meet people who were just discovering the label,” said Lim, who put the call out on social media about the event at his store on Great Jones Street. “I wanted to get back to my retail roots and see if the connectivity is still there.”
Dubbed the “maxi zoot suit,” his take on trendy, oversized tailoring came with some flattering trimmings, including a waist-cinching bungee cord and ruched tails. Lim’s treatment of the classic tracksuit was just as fresh, cut from trapunto and patchwork cotton and finished with graphic stripes that had a graffiti-style feel. The classic puffer was cleverly reinvented with feminine proportions, fashioned from light pillowy layers instead of the explosive Michelin Man rolls that have become the norm.
Though the focus here was clearly on daywear, there were some lovely after-hours pieces, including a glittering silver Lurex suit, that will resonate with cool urbanites in this city—and beyond.
