The Italian accessories brand Furla is celebrating its 90th anniversary with a limited collection of its iconic Metropolis handbag. The bags are available in five different base colors with nine removable flaps to narrate the story of a brand that began its journey in 1927 and since then has traveled, in women’s hands, across these ninety years.
Creative Director Fabio Fusi sampled from the music style of every decade of Furla’s 90 years as a luxury leathergood manufacturer. The handbags were unveiled during Milan Fashion Week in February with a flash mob performance in downtown Milan, complete with swing dancers and tuxedo-clad models. They wore Furla sneakers and carried the nine new Furla bags to kick of the Italian company’s birthday celebration.
Each of the anniversary Metropolis bags invokes a musical theme of the decade, starting with the 1920s, the era of the Charleston and Art Déco. “Every decade in the history of Furla was reinterpreted in a creative and playful aesthetic,” explains Fusi. The 1930s bag pays tribute to the Jazz Era, the 1950s bag celebrates Rock ‘n Roll. Disco, Beat, Punk and Hip-Hop all take their turns, with the final bag for the aughts honoring not music, but rather the age of technology.
“The approach to the design and development of a collection has changed a lot. We now tend to think of individual pieces rather than the whole range,” said Fabio Fusi, explaining the changes at Furla since he took over the creative reins of the leather goods manufacturers in 2010.
Furla’s culture thrives via a strong, typically Italian paradigm – the family business – and an equally decisive vocation to global expansion and commerce. Founder Aldo Furlanetto was a staunch believer in the possibility for success of a company deeply commited to excellence – in accessories, in fashion – for its customers.
