Inside the ephemeral structure raised within the Cour Carrée of the Louvre, the guests at the Christian Dior Fall 2016 show took their seats alongside a long runway with a futuristic feel.

Passing on from outfit to outfit, the looks, initially black from Bar suit to bag, are progressively enriched with freely mixed and matched colors and embroideries. The collection transposes this New Look spirit to the style of a woman of today, with unexpected powers of attraction. Asymmetric necklines bare her shoulders, and if she wears coordinated suits, those typically Parisienne classics, then all the better to show off her legs through a transparent tulle skirt.

This play of seduction is also about playing with style, the spontaneous expression of a personality with an allure derived through total liberty. The plant motifs of a knit clash with the embroidered flowers of a skirt, bags and jewelry are worn in multiples, and even the furs are given the mix-and-match treatment, fusing fox, chinchilla and mink. It’s also a game of appearances: a contrasting rippling peplum sewn to a jacket collar has the look of a scarf, while the motif-enriched linings of a coat-dress imitates the hem of the skirt swishing beneath. Optical effects allude to the Trompe L’œil line designed by Christian Dior for summer 1949.

For the Fall 2016 collection the Dior woman is piling on, mixing and layering her jewelry to compose articulated mobiles in sync with her style.

This spontaneous and creative mixing of forms, colors and materials is also to be found in the choice of bags. A new House icon was to be discovered fully embroidered or cut in exotic leathers such as yellow lizard, teamed with a long-strap glasses case in smooth bordeaux leather or violet lizard. Another bag resembles a giant wallet with compartments. To finish off the look, the cut-out ankle boots also exhibited a subtle play of color and material, whether that be black heels with black crocodile and black laced lizard front, or brown heels with a band of black lizard and dark blue lizard lacing.

For that all-important final touch, the new DiorUmbrage glasses with lenses lightly tinted an orange, green or blue leaf print peppered the looks in the show.
