The Dolce & Gabbana Spring 2016 fashion show pays homage Italy, taking inspiration by late 1950’s and 1960’s tourism with the Italian sights as main influence for the prints of the collection. The designers have gone further than ever before, and after paying homage to the mother, they now pay homage to their mother country.

Dolce & Gabbana maintain an eye firmly on the present and within this vintage atmosphere of a summer in Italy models snapped selfies which were projected directly onto large screens creating a unique mix of old, and new, serious and fun, digital and analogue.

With the sights of Italy the main inspiration for the prints of the collection, subtle references like stripes of beach umbrellas were mixed to stronger statements like the Colosseum embroidery on a flowing black georgette dress or cut out applications of Michelangelo’s David, or simply the beloved Sicilian horse drawn cart.

The sihouettes are perfectly balanced between sixties sun dresses, figure enhancing bodycon shifts, billowing skirts and the odd silk pyjama, emblazoned with blooms bursting with freshness as well as grafic stripes. Added into the mix is black shifts, corsets and skin-tight trouser suits with cropped jackets as well as glam sheer looks, a sure favourite of starlets everywhere, and an emerging trend on the Milanese runways.

Traditional crafts are also referenced heavily in the collection, as part of what makes Italy so special is also its people, their work, traditions and talent. Thus crochet returns to the catwalk, elevated into suits with fur trims or embroidery. Of particular reference a dress, embroidered with table and chair applications, referencing the larger souvenirs from Italy like furniture, and not to talk about the lace, and the majolica Dolce & Gabbana find of infinite inspiration.

The accessories are pure expression of the highest craftsmanship and many also, are unabashedly fun. Oversize sunglasses decorated with precious motifs, prickly pair inspired tiaras, orange earrings, Sicilian cart inspired sandals with pompoms, extravagant box bags and the must have wicker baskets.

Delve into the atmosphere backstage and bask in the warmth of an italian summer, between the sights and natural beauty of Italy, fashion, accessories and selfies!
